Icknield Primary School

Icknield Primary School & Hearing Impaired Provision was ‘born’ on September 1st 2003 when the Infant and Junior Schools merged, but it is only since July 2005 that we actually joined the two buildings together and have become totally “one school”. We work very closely with Icknield High School situated close by at the opposite end of Riddy Lane.
Our school facility comprises 21 classrooms, 4 mobile classrooms (the “Huts”) and two Family Support Worker rooms. Both KS1 and KS2 buildings each boast a large hall and I.T. Suite, a library, resource area, a large playing field and hard surface playground area.
At present, the school has three parallel classes in Foundation, Years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Our pupils this year total 636 and include 26 hearing impaired children. Children’s ages range from 4 to 11, with a nursery for children from 2 years old in the Hearing Impaired Provision.
Our school has a very committed and dedicated staff who provide a wide range of experience and skills.
Our staff comprises 32 Teachers, 32 Learning Support Assistants, 2 Family Support Workers, 1 ICT Technician, 10 Communicators, 6 Secretarial and Clerical Assistants, 22 Senior Midday Supervisory Assistants, 2 Midday Supervisors, 1 Site Agent and 5 cleaning staff.
Strategic planning and direction for our school is led by the Senior Leadership Team which comprises the Headteacher, Snr Assistant Headteacher and 2 Assistant Headteachers, 1 Assistant Headteacher/Inclusion Manager and 1 Business & Admin Manager. Each Year Group has a Year Leader.
As a school we are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of teaching and support for our children and our aim is to continually raise the standards of education across the school. Learning Support Assistants support most classes and a Special Needs Co-ordinator assists and advises teachers on programmes for children who require extra help.
Each year group has a Co-ordinator and staff within each year group meet regularly to plan as a team. There are 7 Curriculum Teams (Literacy, Numeracy, Science & PHSCE, ICT, Humanties, Creativity and Sport).
The atmosphere in the school is one of collaboration and co-operation with mutual help and support being one of our key strengths. Currently the children “set” for Maths and English.
Our provision for the hearing impaired is an integral part of our school with the children all belonging to mainstream classes where they are included for as much of their school day as possible depending on the particular Statement of Special Needs. Our Communicators support this programme under the direction of the Class Teacher and Teachers of the Deaf.
A statement from a recent Ofsted Inspection reads:
“The school provides a very good level of care for all pupils. This is a strength of the school and makes a strong contribution to their learning and achievement. All staff know pupils very well, including those from different ethnic backgrounds and those with special educational needs, and there is a strong commitment towards their pastoral care and welfare. Pupils are happy and secure and are comfortable to approach staff to discuss any problems they may have. All staff provide a very positive response to pupils’ individual, physical and emotional needs”.
Icknield Primary School has benefited from consistently sound governance for a number of years and enjoys a close relationship with a supportive and forward-looking 20 strong Governing Body who are ambitious for its continued development and success.
